2, 2010Jack continues to do well and is getting along great with our border collie and lab. They all play well together despite the sharp puppy teeth chewing on legs and limbs. Jack is very interested in chew toys and has not chewed on any wires, furniture or other household things. His favorite toy, by far is the Kong. It has been a life and limb saver for us and our dogs. When it comes to household items, Jack has learned very quickly what is and isn't okay to play with. He did not disturb the Christmas tree or try to eat any decorations over the holidays. He is doing very well at going to the door and ringing the bell when he needs to go out so there hasn't been an accident in 3+ weeks. He loves to play in the snow in Chicago we can get some pretty big drifts and its funny to see him hop through the yard and sink into the snow. Unfortunately with the snow comes little puppy paw prints, but thankfully he is learning to come in the door and sit for inspection before entering the house. Jack had a bath recently and it was a fun experience. At first Jack was resistant to going near the water, partially because our border collie heads for the hills when the tub turns on, but he warmed up to it. Thankfully he followed our Lab's example and jumped right in. The second he did though you could see a look of shock on his face, like he wasn't expecting the water would make him wet... so we started with the treats. The more treats he got the more relaxed he was, towards the end of the bath, he was actually enjoying it. Unfortunately, if as soon as we turned our backs to get some towels Jack took the opportunity to jump out of the tub, soaking wet, and shake himself dry. After we towel dried him he proceeded to try and further dry himself on our furniture, our dogs, and us. We have discovered that Jack is another one of those
tennis ball obsessed border collies. He loves them! We
walked over to his bed one day and found him, and at
least a dozen tennis balls. He was switching from
chewing on one tennis ball to another. He was in
paradise. As for right now though, Jack is still
oblivious to the fetch concept. He prefers to either
chew on the tennis balls or pounce on them. Sometimes he
acts more like a weird looking cat than a dog. We took him to the vet again and found out that he
has a mite, but it is very treatable. The medicine we
got is working very quickly and it's already looking
better. When he had to get his shots though, he wasn't
the happiest camper. He was jumping around and crying a
lot, the vet then made sure to give a local atheistic
before inserting the microchip. Jack also had his nails
clipped for the first time and he was very good about
it. So far, Jack has yet to lose any of his puppy teeth,
so there will be a little more time under the knives for
us and the dogs.

January 1
Jack slept the majority of today. We actually had to coax him a little to wake up and play in the snow. Probably the last time that will ever happen. Jack was playing with our dogs in the snow for part of the morning. But because it was so cold they were coming in and out frequently, causing many wet puppy prints around the house. Other than that, not much has been happening. Jack in a sentence is a very energetic, loving, absolutely adorable, and very smart and curious. Jack has already learned sit and somewhat knows down. We are working on stay but so far it seems like a while until he's mastered that. December 31 Jack had a wonderful New Year's Eve visiting with people who came to our home. He is very fearless and adventurous and does not like to be confined. He continuously jumped on the baby gates until they fell down and just walked on by them like nothing at all. Our border collie started to protest loudly after the second time because she does not like all the loud noises. Other than that it was a very uneventful, the way we prefer it. Oh, and Jack also received his first Kong today. He absolutely loved it, and it kept him occupied for a good two hours, and after which he had a nice long nap. December 30 This morning we discovered that Jack doesn't like to sleep through the night and that he is cranky in the morning. He was very nippy when he decided to wake up the whole house at two. He also discovered his favorite chew toy in the house, our nine year old yellow lab. Thankfully she is very sweet and docile and just lays there, until he starts to chew a little too hard. Jack also had his first accident in the house today. Hopefully it will be his last, as he is quickly learning the ropes from our dogs. December 29 Today we took him to the vet's office. Jack was diagnosed with parvovirus a week ago and they started treatment immediately. He spent six days in the hospital while in Arkansas, and was in really good shape for the transport. When we went to the vet we received some amazing news. Jack is all better! With that wonderful news Jack received his first set of shots. The vet also thinks Jack is, at the oldest, 3 months because he has yet to lose any puppy teeth. After the vet he spent most of the day sleeping. Unfortunately that meant that he would spend most of the night barking. December 28 We got Jack today and it was a long, nine hour trip for him. He was a very good boy and slept most of the seven hours we drove him. We had a very fun evening as he adjusted to his new living space, and we saw him playing in the snow for probably the first time ever. He was jumping, and pouncing on the snow and trying to eat the snowflakes falling off of the bushes and trees. No matter how much we begged him to just do his business so we could go back into the warmth of the house, he insisted on having his fun. |
